Our late father, E.S. Carr, Sr., was one of the first African American agricultural engineers in the United States and was an endeared agricultural engineering professor at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. He retired after 35 years of service.
After his death in 1982, a memorial scholarship campaign in his name was launched. The funds have been used to provide need-based scholarship aid to students with progressive and scholarly standing.
The first recipient of the E.S. Carr, Sr. Memorial Scholarship in 1983 was Ms. Sonja Russ.

After the death of our mother, Virginia Henderson Carr in 1995, we changed the name of the memorial scholarship to The E.S. Carr and V.H. Carr Memorial Scholarship.
